Teachers Care About Me.

According to the Search Institute, only 33% of middle school students agreed with the statement, “Teachers care about me.” In high school, that number dropped to a shocking 16%. This highlights a major gap in student-teacher relationships.

As an education consultant, I believe strong student-teacher connections are the foundation of student success, engagement, and academic achievement. The good news? Even small, consistent actions can help students feel valued and supported.

Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” – John C. Maxwell

Practical Ways Teachers Can Connect With Students

  • Learn names quickly – It may seem simple, but addressing a student by name builds respect and recognition.

  • Show genuine interest – Ask students about their hobbies, cultures, and goals beyond academics.

  • Practice active listening – When a student shares something, listen without rushing to respond.

  • Celebrate small wins – Recognize effort, not just results. A simple “Well done!” goes a long way.

  • Be approachable – Let students know they can come to you with concerns without fear of judgment.

  • Share a little about yourself – Appropriate personal stories help humanize you and build trust.

By prioritizing connection, teachers can transform classrooms into supportive spaces where students feel safe, respected, and motivated to learn.
