Identity-Based Bullying

Is a harsh reality in many classrooms, and teachers play a crucial role in stopping it. During Ramadan, Muslim students who are fasting may face ridicule or bullying from peers who don’t understand the practice. As an education consultant, I emphasize the importance of fostering empathy, respect, and awareness among all students.

When we educate with empathy, we create classrooms where differences are not mocked but celebrated

How Teachers Can Support Fasting Students

  • Lead by Example: Never participate in or ignore bullying behavior. Students subconsciously model their teachers’ actions. Show respect and set the tone for inclusivity.

  • Empower Through Education: If a Muslim student is bullied for fasting, explain to the class what Ramadan is and why Muslims observe it. Highlight that such practices are rooted in discipline, faith, and culture — not something to be mocked.
  • Create Safe Spaces: Offer opportunities for students to share their experiences and ask questions. This helps break stereotypes and builds empathy.

  • Strengthen Teacher–Student Connections: Build trust so students feel comfortable reaching out for help when faced with bullying. A strong teacher-student relationship can prevent isolation.
  • Promote Bystander Awareness: Teach other students how to support their peers if they witness bullying. Encouraging kindness and solidarity can prevent future incidents.

Final Thoughts

Bullying can deeply affect student success and well-being, but with the right educational strategies, teachers can create safe, respectful learning environments. Supporting fasting students during Ramadan is not just about cultural sensitivity — it’s about building classrooms where every student feels valued.
